The Bristol Avon rises in Gloucestershire and its branches unite Malmesbury in Wiltshire. Well known for its architecture, and steeped in history, Bath is the first city encountered on the river’s journey. Bristol, famous for its ships and seafarers, is the second. The river continues under the Clifton Suspension Bridge and through the spectacular Avon Gorge to the Severn estuary. Made navigable between Bath and Bristol during 1724-7, the Bristol Avon was linked to London in 1810 by the Bath to Newbury section of the Kennet and Avon Canal. The navigation now provides pleasure boaters with an enjoyable cruise. This nostalgic collection of prints and photographs feature town and village scenes, as well as mills, bridges and locks, and there are illustrations of an astonishing range of river craft. This charming new study of the Bristol Avon will be of great interest not only to residents, river users and visitors to the area, but also to those who are researching their family history in the communities along its banks.

The market town of Hungerford has been greatly influenced by its position, lying as it does on the Bath Road, the Kennet and Avon Canal and the Great Western Railway. The coaching era brought prosperity to which the canal added after 1810. The railway, however, had the opposite effect, by taking trade and people to bigger towns to the east. The second half of the 19th century was a testing time for Hungerford, though it was spared the worst of Victorian redevelopments, but from the early 20th century it has seen a resurgence of prosperity and growth.
